Grim Fairytales

Grim fairy tales are more hardcore and violent than Disney fairy tales. Disney fairy tales are known for being happy fun filled adventures that are very appealing to children. Grim fairy tales however, are for children but also teach a lesson in each story. For example in the Grim fairy tale Queen Bee I believe the main lesson that the author is trying to tell is that kindness is rewarded. I think this is the lesson because in multiple cases the main character stops his brothers from killing helpless animals. In the end these animals return the favor by helping the main character with his three tasks that he has to do. Another key example of lesson learning in Grim fairy tales is in Hans My Hedgehog. In this tale the lesson that is repeaded throughout is, keep your promises. I believe this is the lesson, because in the story people promise Hans My Hedgehog things that they don't keep. This makes Hans my Hedgehog very angry, he even kills a lady or "spikes " her. I think this is a good way of scaring kids into keeping their promises, not that that is a good thing but effective.

Nightcrawlers friend or foe

In the story Nightcrawlers I believe that Price is the protagonist not the antagonist. One reason I believe this is because Price never shows intention of hurting or killing anyone. In fact when Price is at the bar he tries not to draw attention. He enters the bar orders three coffees and attempts to be on his way. Instead he is battered by questions and curiosity by Dennis the trooper. Price knows of the damage his powers can do, that's why he does his best to be on his way so he doesnt fall asleep and kill people. since for some reason whatever Price imagines in his head comes true, it is extremly important he doesn't fall asleep near people. If he were the antagonist he'd be trying to get them killed, rather than looking out for the charactors well being.

dozen favorite sci fantasy movies/ shows

12. Van Helsing: Frankenstein, Dracula, wolfman, and van helsing in one movie, you know you’ve got yourself an instant classic. Also other characters were involved like igore, Mr.Right, and the doctor who created Frankenstein. Dracula in this movie is trying to use Frankenstein and wolfman to reek havoc and power his machines to give birth to his vampire offspring. I know this sounds bad but this movies action pack adventurous plot is just so insane. Any ways Dracula has achieved immortality and van helsings usual ways on how to kill a vampire are futile. He finds the only way to kill Dracula is to make a greater sacrifice than anyone could imagine which I wont spoil for you. I love this dark fantasy film because it bends the traditional rules a little bit but doesn’t disappoint. Also the acting in this movie is surprisingly super.

11.  Toy story: This movie will always hold a special place in my heart. Tom hanks plays a talking cowboy (woody) that is in charge of all of Andy’s toy friends. Until one day on Andy’s birthday the devious buzz light-year doll is added to the toy arsenal. The toys are suddenly mesmerized by this toy and are so extremely happy to have him. He suddenly becomes andys new favorite toy. Woody doesn’t take this lightly and is surged with jealousy. These two have to work through thick and thin to get themselves out of a bigger pickle than the sandlot kids did. I enjoyed this as a child and still do because of its original theory on what goes on in a Childs room when he’s not there. It was so convincing I used to believe my toys would be alive when I was younger. It was able to make me laugh and stay interested in the story for many years.

10. Childs play 1-3: Now I am sure most people think I am crazy for having this but it’s just one of the funniest series I think I have ever seen. The protagonist is Andy an innocent little child. The antagonist is Chucky, a psycho criminal that is stuck in a dolls body. In this movie Chucky is trying very hard to escape his body and go into andy’s body. I enjoyed this so much because of the way they made such a scary thing so funny. Chucky the killer doll never failed to deliver punch lines before every single or knockout. He would try to use his voo doo ritual to swap souls with andy so he could be a human again. It was a very stupid and cheesy film but it had it’s hilariousness to back it up.

9: Sin City: This sci fi pulp fiction focused on three main stories about the twisted lives of three individuals through sin city. Each protagonist was an anti hero with a ruthless aggression type attitude that just assumed kill now and ask questions later. Although it was black in white the type of computerization was revolutionary and so necessary to mimic the certain characters. Any one who gets shocked in an electric chair and has nothing to say but “ is that the best you pansies can do” could captivate the attention of anyone. I would put this under either sci fi or dark fantasy just because of the questionable creatures in its show.

8: lord of the rings trilogy: This high fantasy is considered one of the greatest trilogy’s ever made in history. One of the protagonists Frodo Baggins is on a quest to destroy the evil ring of power. He encounters many beasts, traps, and friends along the way. Although it seemed way too long I found this trilogy never bored me yet it made me anxious as to what was to come in the next movie or scene. Gimli one of  my favorite characters ever didn’t hesitate to slaughter oarks and tell jokes at the same time and for that I thank peter Jackson.

7: ghost busters: In my opinion Bill Murrays best performance of all time, because he made it seem like the paranormal ghostbusters was as just as much as a regular job as a firefighter. Some loved them some doubted them but at the end of the day when the marshmellow man came to town, the ghostbusters got the job done. This sci fi flick not only made a song that would never get out of my head but was able to almost scare me at some times ( when I was little) and make me laugh at the same time.

6: Space Jam: The looney toons are back and this time they are being invaded by cartoon aliens and the only way to defeat them is to kid nap Michael Jordan and beat them in a basket ball game. Not only do I believe this is the greatest sci fi movie of all time I believe its one of the greatest motion pictures ever. Michael Jordan is sort of taken away from his realistic element, and shows he can still be a hero when he performs basketball in fictional movies. Oh and having Bill Murray was also a bonus.

5: men in black: This movie has all the greatest things a cock roach alien, a talking pug, and a pissed off Will Smith. The men in black agency needs recruiting and the only one to pass the test is will smiths character. He teams up with an arrogant mib agent who makes him learn the ways of MIB and help save the world from a giant cockroach alien. This is a sci fi film that I enjoy because there is other life out in the universe let’s face it, and this movie shows in a great way how our country would react if aliens approached us in a non hostile way

4: predator: some movies need no commentary, and this is one of them but I will any way because it’s part of the assignment. In this sci fi film an alien is sent to earth and stumbles across Arnold Swartsinager and his group of soldiers. The alien slaughters through them like a knife through butter, but has a tough time with the Arnold but who wouldn’t. I enjoyed this because it made up certain strengths and weaknesses for aliens as if we knew what they actually were. I was amazed that it showed just how far the human would go to survive when Arnold covered himself in mud and crap and made a bow and arrows just so predator couldn’t see him. The only problem I have is they killed  Jimmy ( the first guy to die with the big machine gun) so fast, that guy was a thug.

3: Jurassic park1: This sci fi is almost questionable because it showed what could happen if scientists had those sort of DNA samples of dinosaurs. Not to mention doctor Allen’s unusual obsession with raptors. In this movie a old rich happy man brings back the dinasour species from extinction in his very own Jurassic park. I enjoyed this because it almost made me not want to bring dinosaurs back to life because of the damage the carnivores would do.

2: the matrix trilogy: By far Keanu Reeves best performance in this fantasy blockbuster Neo ( the one) is the only one with the power to save the world from the evil robots that have taken over. other than the awesome one on fifty slow motion kung fu battle scenes between neo and like a million mr smiths. The plot line was very fantasy like and extremely uplifting. It is always reassuring to know that humans will always come out on top.

1. Lost: The series that captivated most of my Netflix viewing. In this show a plane crashes and the survivors are led by Jack Sheppard on what to do next in terms of surviving. Some don’t actually agree with him and some conflict arises. This conflict is shattered when they find out there are others on the island who mean to do harm to them. Throughout the show the main character’s look to survive, uncover the mysteries of this special island, and get off the island. Your probably wondering how this is fantasy or sci fi, well maybe the floating cloud of black smoke that kills certain people will convince you. Not to mention people coming back from the dead to talk to Hurly. Any way this show is very addicting and will break your heart at the same time.

Why does nothing in the dark turn dark elements upside down

The twilight zone nothing in the dark turned fantasy elements upside down because it made death and Mr.death almost seem harmless and painless. Also it made it seem like it was a nice happy thing instead of a dark decrepit thing. For example when the old lady notices the guy in her house is Mr. Death she is alarmed until he shows he's a nice guy and harmless. This proves my point because usually Mr.Death is pictured as this old sketchy skeleton in a weird coat going around killing people. Also it showed that people don't have to fear death because the lady seemed happier and more relieved when she died. Also when Mr. death took the old ladies hand she didn't even realize that she had died from it because she was expecting this big painful experience but instead it turned out to be quite peaceful. This proves my point because some people including the old lady think of dieing as this big painful experience but when it is proved opposite it's turning the elements of fantasy upside down if you ask me. Also when the old lady saw her dead body at rest a happy smile of relief was plastered on her face. Nothing in the dark shows the world that fearing death can be an imprisonment of the mind and your life.

The Twighlight zone blog

The fact that a grandma is trying to get her five year old grand son to commit suicide so he can be with her in the afterlife is what makes long distance call a darker than average ghost story especially for the time period. For example he is talking to his dead grandmother on some messed up telephone he recieved from her when she was alive, then suddenly he jumps into the pond and almost dies. This proves my point because the kid is being lured to death by his grandmother so he can be with her in the after life. Also it's dark for the time period because in the nineteen sixties suicidal five year olds wasn't exactly the normal programming. Another example is before Billy jumps into the pond he jumps in front of a car and is nearly decapitated. When questioned by the driver Billy responded someone told me to. So since hes five and talks to not really anyone but his parents and the mysterious caller on the phone his grandmother is assumed to be the perpatrater. This shows again that his grandmother is trying to get him to die so they can be together. This is so dark because grandmothers are supposed to be the protectors of their grandchildren. The fact that the child is doing all these crazy things is another reason why this is so messed up, because grandmothers are supposed to love their grandchildren but when it gets to the point in which Billy feels she's the parent the relationship becomes unusual and unhealthy.

Setting excercise

A cave In Afghanistan by Donny Murphy

It must of been some kind of military base before, judging from the broken radio transmitters and worn out bunk bed. The walls were moist and rough to he touch. There is absloute darkness  without a light of your own, so dark your hand is invisible if you put it in front of your face. There are small puddles of what appear to be water all over the ground but they aren't deep enough to dampen nothing but the bottom of your boots. The broken radio transmitter sits on a worn out wooden desk that has a broken leg in the bottom left corner. In the chair of the desk sits a skeleton wearing a barret. The skeleton has what appears to be a bullet hole rite through the eye ball. On the bunk an unlit broken lantern hangs from the top. Old versions of the islamic bible lie scatterd amongst the bunks and ground. Underneath the bunk is a trap door leading underground it must have been used by the guards as an escape route.

My Science Fiction introduction

In this class I think we'll be exploring and reading a lot of different sci fi and fantasy storys, books, and films. Also I think after we finish a certain unit we will post and write about it on our blog. I think we will branch off each aspect of sci fi from dark sci fi to high fantasy etc. From each form of reading we recieve I believe we will have to respond by either worksheet, essay, short essay, or other. I think tests in this class will be on certain novels we read or certain aspects of either sci fi or fantasy.
